Interesting. This topic could spiral quickly into a pissing contest, but I’m glad I read it. Thanks for posting. I agree and disagree with it. Flex helps make consistent contact between the face and the ball.


Howard Jones has posted plenty that someone who might be fitted into an X-stiff shaft simply by looking at club head speed might actually fit better into a stiff flex shaft because of how they swing the club.
You could have two players who create the same amount of club head head but create it totally different ways.


i believe that the make up of the shaft has more bearing on the results than the flex that is stamped on it. Find the shaft that works with your swing with regards to weight, bend point, etc… and then fine tune the numbers with the correct flex.


In my personal experience I hit stiff or x stiff about the same depending on the shaft. It seemed like the tip stiff shafts worked very well for me in stiff flex. If a shaft was too soft I missed more shots to the left. Distances were about the same. I don’t care what the flex says.


Shaft flex in general doesn’t play a role in distance. BUT….. Playing the proper flex and profile shaft for YOU will provide more distance over an improper fitting shaft. That could be firmer or softer depending on what your playing to start with.


I am very realistic about my distances. I have no illusions about how far I hit the ball, or should I say delusions. 🙂 What would be the point of lying to myself about how far I hit a certain club? The only person I would be hurting is myself. If anything, I over club.
