How to get iron shots off the ground?
In this article, we are going to talk specifically about one key element of getting your iron shots off the ground – hitting down through impact. Many new golfers are surprised to learn that the key to getting iron shots airborne is actually to hit down through the ball at the bottom of the swing. That seems backwards on the surface, but it starts to make sense the more you think about it. Since your irons all have some degree of loft built into the club head design, you can hit down and trust that loft to do the job of getting the ball off the ground. As long as you make clean contact, backspin will be produced at impact – and that backspin will help the ball to climb higher as it flies. Once a golfer experiences the feeling of hitting down and seeing the ball go up, everything changes. If you are still struggling to get the ball off the ground when swinging your irons, we hope the content below helps you get on the right track.
What does a divot mean in golf?
For the vast majority of the iron shots you see the pros play, there will be a divot which comes up after the ball has been struck. That divot can only mean one thing – the player has hit down nicely through the ball. A divot is the result when the club tears into the turf at the bottom of the swing arc.
Why do people top the ball when they hit the equator?
For a lot of people actually topping the ball when they hit above the equator, when they try and correct it, they make it even worse because they actually end up trying to lift and scoop the ball up so it’s like a self perpetuating fault, they do it and they keep doing it.
How to convince yourself that golf is the right way to go?

By watching the best players in the world make their way around the course, you can see how they get the job done. For the vast majority of the iron shots you see the pros play, there will be a divot which comes up after the ball has been struck. That divot can only mean one thing – the player has hit down nicely through the ball.
Why do golfers carry on the backswing?
Most of the time, when a player tries to swing extra hard in order to hit a powerful shot, he or she will carry on the backswing much too long. That means the club is going to wrap around the body at the top of the swing, and the body weight may be pulled toward the target prematurely.
How to hit down on a golf ball?
It’s one thing to know that you need to hit down on the ball – it’s another thing to actually make that happen. You need to have both your body and the club in the right position if you are going to move the club down through the ball effectively. If you are out of position, it won’t matter how much you want to hit down, as it simply won’t be possible. Since the golf swing happens quickly, you don’t have enough time to make up for any mistakes that occur along the way. You need to be in the right position from start to finish if you hope to produce consistent results.
Why is it important to practice golf?
Smart, attentive practice leads to good results in this game. Many golfers spend time at the driving range mindlessly, and then wonder why they aren’t getting better. Instead, the game rewards those who think about their practice routine, work on specific issues, and gradually improve their skills.

Hi guys, for some reason whenever I am hitting the driver off the tee these days, the ball seems to go about 50 yards dead straight and then it decides to dive bomb down into the ground.
thug the bunny
I didn’t even look at your vid cause this says it all. You are obviously putting topspin on the ball. The way you do this in tennis or ping pong is to hit up on the back of the ball, and the same physics applies with a driver. You don’t need to ‘swing up’ to get the ball in the air because the loft does that for you.
Thanks everyone, I didn’t even notice my grip was different until you guys pointed it out. I corrected that first but alas it didn’t seem to change anything. What DID fix it was taking a step back and crouching down an extra inch or two. Suddenly all my drives were straight, perfect height and long.
How many degrees of loft do you flip a golf driver?
It’s rare, and it takes a horrid looking swing to do it because the loft is the DYNAMIC loft, so if you flip at all your driver’s actually got 20 degrees of loft, or more… the hands have to be forward AND rising A LOT… It’s so rare I truly doubt these balls are hit "square on the face of the club.".
What is the best iron to hit if your swing speed is 119?
Oh, and if your swing speed is 119 with a driver you should be hitting a 6-iron about 210, so okay, use a 5-iron.
How far does a golf ball go at impact?
Explain how a ball leaves the face of a driver at impact goes out 30 to 50 yards at about 10 to 20 feet in height and then dives straight down as if it were sucked into the ground. A ball only acts in this fashion when it has top spin, sick topspin.. ALSO bear this in mind. The ball is hit square on the face of the club, not the leading edge or bottom of the face. Its hard to imagine since its unlike anything that this board ever sees, the ball literally gets slapped and the club is lifted vertically at impact at extremely high speeds. No its not a top. It is a very bad swing. maybe not in baseball but it is in golf
Can you swing fast with a club head?
You might swing fast but I doubt you have a high club head speed with whats happening. Your hands are probably very far in front of the club face (so you aren’t releasing the club at impact which would also result in slow club head speed) and your contacting the ball as the club is moving upwards (which a lot of people do with their driver). Just think of it this way, your club face might be at 9° of loft but your club head is moving upwards at 11°. This would create a top spin.
Where can you hit the ball with the leading edge of the driver?
iacas said: You can hit the ball with the leading edge of the driver near to or even slightly beneath the equator of the golf ball, and if the clubhead is moving upwards, create a drive that isn’t "topped" but which has topspin. I appreciate the fact that you can comprehend the physics.
Can topspin be applied to a baseball?
no topspin can be applied, its basically like slapping the ball and lifting steeply at impact. To the OP I assume you were a baseball player? /power hitter/ dead pull hitter?
Should you hit a golf ball on the downswing or upswing?
you SHOULD be hitting it on the downswing, not upswing.#N #If your ball is nose diving, then I can only see one thing happening… you’re topping (thinning the ball with the bottom lip of your club face) the ball with your driver…thus creating top spin.
How To Regain Confidence And Your Golf Swing
I remember the first time I had lost my golfing mojo. I went from consistently swinging a score of 80-85, to being well into the triple digits. At the time, I couldn’t work out what was wrong with my golf swing. It felt like I went back in time, back to when I was a beginner.
How I fixed My Golf Swing
I decided to do 3 simple things each day for a total of 30 days. Once my own experiment was complete, I completely regained my swing and was chipping consistently. I’m happy to report that I was playing my best golf ever!
1. Practice One Drill 100 times
I made a promise to myself that I would practice hitting irons over and over again. In fact I chose to do the drill 100 times per day. I knew there wasn’t much point performing my normal golf routine. Instead I focused on the problem, and practiced consistently.
2. Meditate and Visualize Your Best Shots
Aside from repeatedly practicing I also incorporated 20 straight days of visualizing and meditation. The results are undeniable. This is when I saw a huge improvement in my golf swing! In fact after only 1 day of doing this I noticed a small but noticeable boost in my swinging technique.
The Visualization Experiment
Make no mistake about it. I have tried dozens of different ways to gain confidence on the golf course. This is why I feel extremely confident sharing my ideas with you. Although everyone’s situation is different, I likely know what’s going wrong in your game.
To conclude this article, I’m very confident that what I have shared with you will get you out of your golfing slump. In fact my technique works every single time for me!

Why is weight distributed in golf?
When a golfer places too much weight on their front foot, it increases the chances of a golfer getting out front of and "stabbing" at the ball, which is likely to yield a low trajectory off the drive. Can you tee the ball up off the ground?
A number of golfers, worried about teeing the ball up too high and hitting a high, looping drive, tee the ball up just off the ground. This, however, can yield a low drive, as it can cause a golfer to "top" the ball, thereby lining it off the tee and not getting much air time.
